A Brief History
E.H. Taher & Company was founded in the year 1933 by Shk. Taher Vadnagarwala in Calcutta on Netaji Subhas Road.
Shk. Taher Vadnagarwala was a fearless Entrepreneur by nature. He had the zeal to setup an empire with no educational background or money. Shk. Taher first came to Calcutta in his early teens in search of a job from his native town of Vadnagar in Gujarat. He worked in an establishment called A.N. Hassanally & Company (which still exists today, in the same market as E.H. Taher and Company as a helper. Over a few years he quickly surveyed the markets with his limited (yet brilliant) knowledge. This survey helped him and in the year 1933 he rented a shop in the market with his savings and small loan. Over here he started E.H. Taher & Company.
During that time India was under the British rule and the manufacturing industry in India was in the introduction stage. Almost nothing was manufactured in India; all goods were imported from England by the British. Hence there was nothing one could do and the first five years of E.H. Taher and company did not bear as much fruit as Shk. Taher had anticipated, but he did not lose heart.
Soon the Second World War broke out and the British were drawn into it. They required supplies for their armies almost instantly. It was not possible to import from England. The Indian manufacturing industry was now given importance. The demand was huge and the supply limited. The British used whatever was available to them. This was a breakthrough what Shk. Taher was looking for.
Shk. Taher capitalised this opportunity and used all his contacts in the British high offices and got orders for supply to them. The British paid whatever was asked for. Shk. Taher had struck ‘gold’.
From the time of the Second World War till India`s freedom in 1947 Shk. Taher had made a small fortune for himself, but this was not the end. This was the beginning. After Independence the British had left everything as it is and left the country. They had left back huge warehouses filled with construction hardware materials Untapped. These products were auctioned off at scrap value to the local buyers as the new owners did not have any idea of the products. Shk. Taher reaped these opportunities and bought tons and tons of this material at scrap value and sold them at premium values to people in other parts of the country, sometimes making profits of up to 1000%.
This acquired wealth helped him setup his empire which he had always dreamed of. Within the next 7-8 years he went on a construction spree, building four multi-storeyed buildings, one factory, one hospital and another branch office at Princep Street.
E.H. Taher And Company was now a small empire with its own manufacturing unit dedicated to manufacturing components of the budding Indian Railways. It continued its supply business alongside at both the branches, which kept a check on the regular flow of income.
It was 10 years into the flourishing manufacturing business when Naxalites attacked Calcutta and the manufacturing industries, endangering the lives of workers. This misfortune forced Shk. Taher to close his manufacturing unit to protect his employees. The concentration of business now shifted to supply of the construction hardware procured earlier.
As the concentration in this field increased, the business also increased which attracted large established organisations like Rally Wolf to approach E.H. Taher & Company for dealership. This was the First Step towards converting E.H. Taher & Company into a retailer for construction hardware. E.H. Taher & Company was established as dealer and business started flourishing.
Even though the dealership was there E.H. Taher & Company’s main income was still not from retail. During this time a German Giant called BOSCH entered India in alliance with the MICO group in Chennai. They specialised in Power Tools and Automotive Technology. They surveyed the Indian markets and selected E.H. Taher & Co. as a dealer for power tools in Eastern India. Though they saw that E.H. Taher & Co. did not excel in retail, but they also saw that the company had determination and Trusted Name in the market. With this hope they started the venture.
It took E.H. Taher & Company and BOSCH continuous hard work of marketing and selling of these Power tools to help BOSCH stabilise itself in the Eastern Market. But once set there was no turning back (In fact there was never a look back) and E.H. Taher & Co. was a leader on an all India level for marketing of BOSCH Power Tools.
Alongside during this period E.H. Taher & Co. also developed other product lines in the same construction hardware segment and became a specialist in this field of operation, which are clearly visible today.
PROFESSIONAL SERVICE CENTER
E.H. Taher and Company`s service center is a Big Gem in its Crown. After all it is one of India`s Best Authorized Service Center (declared in Bangalore on September 11, 2009 at the All India Awards Ceremony of BOSCH LIMITED).
Service has always been an integral part of the power tools industry. Without service no power tool can last in the market for long. After sales it is important to ensure that the product runs properly and gives value for money to customer. Like an automobile a power tool also requires regular services in order to keep functioning normally. Sadly this concept has not set in to the minds of the Indian consumer.
E.H. Taher & Co. has good facility area at the Princep street branch where any type of BOSCH power tools, pneumatic tools and other common tools are serviced. The facility holds stocks which are sufficient to last up to 15 working days. It has 6 working hubs and 1 lathe machine upon which special items are manufactured. The facility employs 10 workers who work on a full time shift of 8 hours a day.
